Cruisin' the Grooves

The suspension on my 3 year old cartridge (Dynavector XX2 Mk II) collapsed just before Xmas and so on Tuesday I headed down to Phonography in Winchester to sort out a replacement. After auditioning a Linn Kandid and a Dynavector XV-1s they mounted the latter on my deck to try. They didn't get to take it off! Stunning. Here is it is revealing things in Graceland that I'd never heard before.

Pete, do you hear things in the vinyl that you don't hear in a digital version? (I mean, other then the snap crackle and pop.;))

Yeah, a pizza - you just didn't recognise it, Rob as it isn't deep fried! ;)

I do indeed, Brian and my CD player DAC is no slouch. As for the snap, crackle and pop, on a cleaned record and a good turntable / cartridge combination you often get none at all. I also enjoy the ritual of playing an album. I never listen to music on the go, as it were, and the a streaming system doesn't appeal, despite the convenience / accessibility. I have looked at such systems and listened to a few but always drift back to LP and CD.

Well, I'm an LP listener too. My system isn't first-rate, but it's pretty good: Arcam Alpha 9 amp, a Project turntable and floor-standing Tannoy speakers, with very thick connecting wires. I don't mind the odd bit of snap, crackle and pop, but most new LPs are silent in that regard. I try to get 80gms vinyl if available. I love the ritual of taking the LP out of the sleeve, and putting the arm over. I do hear a difference. My least-favourite format is CD, then LP, then 78rpm - I have an old player. Some of those thick 78s sound amazing. Luckily there is a specialist shop just twenty minutes away, it sells players and records, most of which are only 50 pence or a pound.

78's are amazing!! I done a set in a rock 'n' roll club in Inverness totally on 78! the punters couldn't believe it

Nice one Pete. It was a revelation for me when I bit the bullet and and bought an expensive MC cartridge. I realised that to some extent you are paying more for a smaller diamond stylus. It seems odd until you realise the work that must go into cutting those things. Although possible it was a bit wasted on that Dinosaur Jr album I bought. It wasn't the last word on fidelity.

Great image Pete...very jealous here...my Revolver deck was fitted with a Linn arm and it was awesome through my Cairn Aria amp and home made horns...

Stripped it all back for a few years, but steadily rebuilding...another pair of Rear Loaded Horns and tube amp is the project for this year...:)
