He's mining for gold! ;)

Olympus XA3 and Kodak Tri-X. Processed in Rodinal. (Sorry about the oof; I shot it quickly and without stopping to observe the behavior. :)

Brilliant moment well captured!!
shame it's not perfectly in focus i suppose, but it doesn't detract hugely!
Thanks Hamish. I need to seriously slow the pace and try harder to level the camera when I'm out and about. (But this special moment, portraying a public demonstration of what I think is such a uniquely human behavior, and normally frowned upon in society, was not to be missed.) ;)

Classic!

So is the Tri-X a 400 ASA film?

Just wondering how you go with aperture and shutter speeds when shooting on the go

Yes Chris. Tri-X is 400 ASA. It's the classic B&W Kodak "old school" film. Actually, I believe older versions of the film were rated at 320 ASA. And I think I have seen on line comments from people who say it shoots really well at that speed, even though box speed is 400.

When shooting with the XA3 there is nothing you need to do regarding aperture and shutter speed. All you need do is set the distance scale (close up, middle distance or far away).

I think I must had this one set wrong. The annoying thing about the XA3 I have discovered, is that when you close and then re-open the clambshell, the distance is automatically reset to the middle distance setting. I have to try to remember to adjust it from that if I see a shot that requires close up or infinity. It's been hard.

The XA, on the other hand, is a rangefinder. This is good. However, I find it impossible to see the image line up in the viewfinder window. This is bad. So, what I normally do is try to shoot f5.6 and set the distance to 8 feet. This is the hyperfocal for that camera. (Indicated by red paint on the 5.6 and the 8.) It works out pretty good sometimes.
