I'm bored with digital work already. I can't stop myself from editing the crap out of them. I don't do this with film shots, so what makes me do it with digital? Fuji XS-1.

Hmm, now I wonder why that is. I usually know how I am going to present an image when I take it and I suppose I also tend to present in a similar way. Maybe that is what is missing. With film much of the character of the image is coming from the choice of film and, to some extent, the lens.
 
I get that Rob...maybe the answer is to shoot JPEG and just accept the result...rather than take a digital negative (RAW) and play with it because we can...
 
Dougie - these were jpgs, not raw. The XS-1 has the annoying thing where it assumes you want jpeg, and you have to ask it to shoot raw for EACH shot.

Hamish - I think you hit the nail on the head in saying I haven't developed a digital style. I'll think about that.
 
There is so much flexibility with digital that you (me especially) can very often over do it.

Use a pre set film simulations like VSCO Kodak Gold or Tri-X and you may be happier! :cool:

I'm aware that VSCO is a trifle expensive to obtain (legally)...is there any other film simulations for Lightroom which would more suit an honest working mans pocket...???
 
Don't fight it Rob - edit the crap out - immerse yerself in those dirty ones and zeros :)

Best film simulation for me is erm... film :)

I shoot both digital and film and enjoy both for different reasons. Digital pays the mortgage and is more practical for high volume shooting like sports & wildlife - but I enjoy the process of shooting film at least as much as the end product :)

DxO Filmpack is pretty good.

and I used to use the Pixel Genius products quite s bit a few years ago.

@Chris Dodkin recommended Mastin Labs as well some time back.

And of course you can mix your own either in LR or via Nik Software.

We are not that far apart. My VSCO package was a free one they offered. There are similar film simulation offerings from a number of companies at differing prices. DXO do some as do onOne (perfect suite of LR plug ins) and Nik Software. Nik do some very good plug in software for LR including Silver Efex2 which can do some nice things for Black and White.

Some offer a 30 day trial. I got my Nik and Perfect plug ins as offers too.
 
I have the complete Nik suite already. That's part of the problem!

I think there is something wrong or dishonest with trying to make digital look analogue, rather than embracing the digital.

Ah, life's a struggle, then you die! :)
