Diglis Lock Crane

Dan Cattermole

Dan Down - The Steampunk Womble
I was delightfully informed by Mr Brookes on here about some works that the British Waterways & May Gurney are currently carrying out in order to improve/maintain the major lock system.
Many Many thanks Thomas, It really is astonishing to see the base of the lock and get an idea of how big it is!
Unfortunately, I was very limited in were I could take shots from.
At this moment in time I was on the phone to Hamish, wondering if he was coming out to play..... but he couldn't :( bad times, bad times :(

He told me how much he liked the Island that lies between the wier and the locks, which happens to be 'private land' (to me, that means 'welcome, make yourself at home, and please do, explore till your hearts content') lol
Although no sign is displayed to indicate this, I took this to my advantage. tut tut. heheheheeee!!!

It really is a very tranquil and misterious place, I can understand the love that Hamish has for this Island, with a camera and permission, you could be on there for DAYS!!

Anyway, I don't know nothing about the history about this crane which I'm sure someone would be able to say as this is the first time I been on this Island. I spent about 45mins on there, and I thought right, time to go, I'm pushing my luck now.

Then, and only then a construction engineer approached me and said in a polite yet strict tone (and in a Jordie accent)

Jordie; 'What da fook ya doin on here like?'
Me; Taking pictures, not doing anyone any harm'
Jordie; 'Do ya nor, this is praavit proper'y?
Me; 'No I'm really sorry I didn't know, I'm only taking pictures, would you like me to leave?'
Jordie; 'Well, Me top gaffa is over there like, so I've gotta look like I'm doing sumink aboot it ya nor... hang aboot.... yer.. me gaffa's gettin in his mo'er..... yer, look man, jus' close da gate behind ya... I don't give a fook, ya can snap aaall deee long like alreet?.'
Me; 'alright, thanks very much. much appreciated'
Jordie; 'nor bother'

and thats how it went really. I found that if your assertive about the situation, explain what your doing, not aggressive, nor passive, you tend to get on the right side of the person your bieng approached by. lol.

Okay, enough trappin. more about the pictures now.
when I took the photos, I had a thought in my mind.
I programmed my brain to think that I was taking these shots in film, so I didn't press the shutter untill I was absolutely sure that what saw through the viewfinder, was what I wanted. (okay, lets exclude the PP afterwards) but let me assure you, there was alot of looking, and not alot of snappin, hence, these were the ONLY shots taken in the 45mins. chuffed with that. except the shaky shot caused by a gust of wind...... well I was on an Island :p

hope you enjoy :)

Thanks for looking :)

Great outing, I've only shot this antique from the bank, Love them and the B&W works well, if the first didn't have the 'modern' background I would give it the Dogz....as it is I can only give it the Beez :)

1 & 2 - gorgeous!

Especially #1 - all that rust detail, and the lovely PP

I've seen a picture of this on the net, well, a minute clip on YouTube if you like (just interested in the history of it) and I'm sure it looks like it has moved 180 degrees. Lol
Thanks for the comment chris :)

Dan I think you could be right, it is good to see that it still has life in it's heart. I bet it could tell a thousand stories, I hope it stays and doesn't find itself a victim of its time like so much of our past..

Taken from the east bank a couple of months back.

Awesome mate!
I bloody love that crane! Its about my favorite thing in worcester!
Very well captured, and im very envious of your having (making) the opportunity to go and take some shots of it!
I must get over there soon! ...
The lock house is an awesome thing too... that whole island is like stepping back in time!
And with the whooshing noise from the weir that is muted by the surrounding trees it does make quite a magical place! even more so by the fact that technically your not supposed to be allowed on to it ...

Great shots Dan. 1 and 2 for me. Especially 1.

Love the story behind the shots as well.
would you like me to leave?'
What charming and child-like innocence. That must have melted the Geordie's heart! LOL.

Thanks for confirming that one kev, could of sworn I saw it differently the last time I saw it, many years ago....

Hamish, that weir is mental, the noise is so therapeutic, I also noticed when your focusing on what your doing, that whooshing noise becomes distant and unoticable. Thanks for viewing the pics, inspired by Askew and Bradley, I did have you in mind ;) putting everything together I've learnt for these pictures. Lol.

Brian, it was the charm that allowed me to continue to do what I was doing on there, it was a shame that the heavens opened and I left because of that.... Who knows what would of happened .... I had my wire wool and mummy torch with me ;)

Oh, I had a though today...... People may think I'm on drugs, but, doesn't anyone think that the crane looks like (maybe a fee legs short) a mechanical spider of some sort? Can anybody see th...... Okay, I swear that was sugar I out on my cereal this morning :p

Looks like a crane to me Dan reckon you bin on da juice.............Hehe........ I see things like that in many things, but try to keep quiet about it cos some peeps don't got the soul...know wot I meen man?

Yeah bwuv, I rekson I get ya nah bled?!! :/ lol :)

Very nice and the PP works well with the image. Funny story too with the Geordie accent :D.

Whats the PP do tell Dan!

Thanks Paul. In LR I converted to grayscale, adjusted the tones curves slightly and changed the highlights with the spit toning. Very easy and straight forward. Literally took about 30 secs. Lol

you got far too much street cred my friend............far too much time spent on da streets................you ma be meeting a chap called Hamish supping wine out of a brown paper bag.......sorry off thread but.........needed to go there :)
