if I am currently with Photoshelter, but wish to move to SmugMug, how do I go about 'moving' the domain name to point to the SmugMug site? I acquired the domain through Dreamhost, and still use their services.

Unfortunately there isn't only one possible answer ...
You will either need to change the nameservers To the smug mug ones or the a record to the smug mug IP.
You you have a email address set up on the domain?
