Another from the trip to Dungeness and Camber back in March.



Leica M9 + 35mm Leica Summilux M f1:1.4. ISO 160, 1/1000s at f1:9.5. PP in LR and Nik Color FX Pro 4.

For some reason, I occasionally get banding in one-colour gradients when processing with Nik. I can't work out what combination gives it though.

Thanks, both. Sadly the banding is there and it is from the processing (I've tried various alternatives but it comes back each time) and is visible whether I export as JPEG or TIFF. I will try and print it though to see if it is still visible as it maybe something to do with screen rendering (try scrolling up and down a bit).

Yep, I see it. Less compression in the JPEG? You have tried it already, I guess....

I did and it appears in uncompressed TIFF too. It does't happen often but it is definitely associated with the Nik processing.

So. there is some sort of compression in any case, I guess?

There must be. Maybe in the way they handle the rendering of continuous tones.

Thanks, Julian. No, the sun was quite low and the sky was a nice blue to start with and was enhances a bit (but not that much) in post. Polarisers are a fiddle with a rangefinder.

Ok I did wonder it it was causing the banding which is accentuated by processing.

No. And there's not a hint in the raw.

It is lovely Pete, but you did underexpose it purposely did you not?

Yes, by about 1 stop (I'm pretty sure I used f/8 - the EXIF for the M9 is often a bit off!), to ensure I kept some detain in the clouds and to handle the extreme contrast on the dunes. I expanded it in post.
