Early Canon EOS greasy shutter (Temporary) Repair

I have been looking for a very cheap working camera body to go with a takumar 55mm 1.8 lens I managed to pick up cheap for our http://www.realphotographersforum.c...ap-chips-challenge-rpf-photo-competition.html.
It needed to be either m42 mount (the lens is m42) or have a FBD short enough to mount an m42 lens with an adapter and still retain infinity focus!
After a bit of thought the early Canon eos range sprung to mind.
They often go cheap as they have an inherent problem with grease getting on the shutter caused by deterioration of a shutter bumper!
I found one in a bin of "junk" at my local branch of London Camera Exchange... There was a lot of grease on the shutter blades, to the point that when it was first fired they very slowly opened and closed.
I decided to attempt a repair and in lieu of a long description of my findings I have made a short video ...

Less than ideal... but it works!
No more sticky shutter, at least until the grease spreads again!

Apparently it is possible to replace the bumper, but i cant see it being worth while on a camera of this age and quality... Still, its a nice fix to keep that old EOS going... even if the process does need repeating once in a while!

And yes, before you ask, this is my first Canon ...
I'd still like a 5d, but you gotta start somewhere eh ;)

You've crossed the chasm Hamish - I'm so proud of you! :D

Looks like you'd get a few dozen shots before another wipedown is required, Hamish. I bought an EOS 750 for $10.00 some time ago and it had/has an oily residue on the shutter. But it works fine. Used it a few weeks ago. I suppose it's only a matter of time though. Nice little vid!

Yeah, I have seen so many eos cameras gone this way, I thought it about time to see if there was a fix all be it a temporary one ...
Have you ever seen any shots from a gummed up one?
We used to get people in the shop all the time with packs of photos with the bottom half black or with oddly uneven exposure!
I suppose my recommendation would be to give the blades a wipe before each film ...
There is always a risk of doing more damage messing with shutter blades, but really when a camera has gone this way you don't have much to loose... It's already broken, so if you realy break it by prodding at the shutter you have only realy broken a broken camera!
Should do me for my cheap as chips challenge anyway, and I thought it might give Darren a few ideas if his cheap one has gone this way too ...

Ha!
Actually, one of the main reasons I want a canon (outside of the tse thing) is for thier short FBD ... Perfect for mounting older differently mounted lenses!
I think you can even mount Nikon lenses with the right adapter ;)

Basically I want a 5dii ...
But I can't see that happening any time soon! As it turns out knocking walls down and replacing floors in your house is not a cheap endeavour ;)
What canon are you looking at Alan?

i was looking at maybe the 600D or 60D or maybe go for a bridge. Just looking at maybe getting something to use alongside my Nikon D300s. A 7D would be cool if I had the funds though :)

I had considered getting a big tele for my Nikon but my focus seems to be drifting towards auld buildings so not so much need for a wildlife hunting lens at moment.

Assuming you buy a body and lens within the budget, correct?

You can't just buy a body, then stick on that f0.95 50mm you happened to have in your closet! :D
