Fuji G617 Panoramic Camera with Velvia 50 ASA FIlm - PP in NIK SilverFX

4 sec exposure @ f/22

Pacific Ocean off Carlsbad CA

Brought to mind a book I read once, of a community of early humans in Scotland. They lived in Shelters on the far north coast of the mainland. But every day they would look out over the water - about the same distance as in this photo - to see the sun shining on the beach of Orkney. The story describes this growing yearning among the community to set out to explore that land, but the sea between them was a rough one. Fascinating stuff. In the end, they never made it. Bloody Vikings came and killed them all!

Thanks everyone :)

Here's the same shot in color

I like this shot - but it doesn't have the drama for me that the B&W shot has

Using a red filter at conversion to B&W has really added separation to the cloud layers, enhanced the sunlight streaming through the gaps in the cloud, and given that feeling that you're on the edge of space, looking at a nebula or galaxy.

The Velvia has done a great job pumping up the colors - and I'm really happy at how that translated across into B&W - so I'll be trying this on other shots for sure.

The Velvia really came into it's own in the later stages after sundown, when for a minute or so, the sun shone through a gap and lit the underside of the cloud mass

Nature put on quite the display - but in 60 seconds it was all done, and we were back to grey cloud and approaching darkness.

This color shot was 6 sec @ f/22 - you can see the fast moving cloud on the left hand side is blurred with movement during that time.

Hi Chris
Thanks for the colour shots I love them both. The monochrome looks great, but the colour in those skies are epic. I shot a similar sunset a couple of months ago and the layering in the clouds reminded me of molten steel.

Superb stuff Chris, really superb.

Have you heard of this guy, I stumbled upon his site the other day by accident really http://www.markdentonphotographic.co.uk/
Thanks Paul
Yes, I've been in touch with Mark by Email - he has done some stunning work around Yorkshire (and other places too) with the 617 - he also sells used 617 cameras and even provides hands-on training as part of the sale - top man :)

Damn Vikings! :(

Great shot Chris. I prefer the B&W version too. Absolute stunner! How did you determine the exposure settings? (I'm guessing you didn't go by the Sunny 16 rule.)
Thanks Brian - I spot metered off the brightest clouds, then used zone to place that in zone 7 (+ 2 stops). Then opened up one more stop for the center ND filter = total 3 stops over metered spot reading

Wowza yowza! That mono is stunning!

DO-NOT-NEED-THIS-CAMERA! :confused::mad::confused:
Thanks Dave :)

You do need one really, go on, you know it makes sense! :D

You might as well be talking Greek to me. But I am mightily impressed. (I want to know how to do these things when I grow up!)

I prefer the black and white, it is great. But since I descend from the mentioned Vikings, I bow my head in shame and leave this forum in humbleness. Albeit not everything coming from a Scotsman regarding the Vikings are true you know.
