A cracker, Chris. Perfect comp, of course. Developing desert land is very important for future space travel, I believe. Is this part of an experiment into that?

Thanks Rob - I'm sure NASA will have looked at this area - but the agriculture has been blooming here since the Colorado river was diverted, and the water fed by canals to the area in order to irrigate the land.

When you look from satellite, you can see the extent of the irrigated area, surrounded by the desert - south of the Salton Sea (Which was only formed by accident when they screwed-up the diversion of the Colorado!)

I was at the southernmost tip of the region when I took the photo, looking south towards the mountains in Mexico.

You couldn't ask for better lead in lines there could you. Super.
Thanks Paul - I initially only shot horizontal (landscape) images, then as I packed-up to head out I figured I'd better do one Portrait orientation shot. Of course, that's the one I ended up liking!

Excellent shot Chris. What's planted there?
Thanks Glenn - they seem to grow a lot of veggies in the area, also some grain - further East we saw fruit trees, and further North grape vines

Love the furrows and how my eye is taken to the mountains and then up to the right. Really nicely composed and exposed.

One question on the satellite view. In the area below the Salton Sea (bottom of pic) most of the fields are nicely rectangular and oriented on an angle up to the right. Probably north south I'm guessing. But in the lower left corner the fields, while still rectangular, are oriented more randomly. Any idea why?

The random fields are over the border in Mexico - you can see the line of the border in the field patterns - amazing!

i think a square crop might be in order, just to appease the forum pete. ;) nice work chris, love the lines and bright colors. and naturally you get my seal of approval with any photo which features mountains.
Thanks Beth - Shhhhh, don't say anything to P*t* ;)

Wonderful shot, Chris. You know, after many years in Southern California, I'm yet to visit the Salton Sea area. I must change that. Anyway, absolute stunner, this shot!
