It’s good to have a little perspective—to know where you stand and just how big (or small) your world and the things in it are. Cary Wolinsky and Bob Caputo have a combined forces to provide some excellent pointers for providing perspective in your photographs, and this article has some excellent reference shots as well as the hints and tips.

There are also times when you might want to use scale to emphasize a point. In the image below, Robert wanted to capture the height of the Mississippi River is as it passes by the French Quarter in New Orleans, getting across the idea that the city could be threatened by even slightly rising water.
Note the use of deep DOF to keep subject and reference object in focus.
