Hello everyone. My interest in a particular brand of HiFi speaker brought me into contact with Chris Dodkin and he has introduced me to Real Photographers - so here I am.

I have been trying to take good-looking snapshots for over 45 years but for a number of reasons my interest in photography has taken a big step forwards over the last few months.

The first reason is getting good eyesight back. I developed cataracts in my 50s, then had post-operation problems but finally it has all been fixed. I now have an enhanced appreciation of the value of eyesight and a deeper understanding of the problems of being partially sighted.

The second reason is that I have finally found a digital camera I really like and can work with. It happens to be the Sony A35 SLT. As with software, this is a personal thing, but I find the controls and menus make sense and help me to get the results I want. The EVF also worked and continues to work well with my particular eyesight "setup". I am also pleased with the results I am getting with the relatively low cost Sony prime lenses.

Finally, I have discovered the importance of post-processing. I used to dislike being locked away in a darkroom; by way of contrast, working with Aperture and, currently, Snapseed is a pleasure. [I did try to switch to Lightroom but I found I was too set in my ways].

My aim in all this is to simply record key moments and events in our life and to produce images that I like the look of, without getting too arty or technical about it. Primarily this is for our family, but if others like some of the images, and there is evidence that they do, then that is satisfying for someone who was useless at art at school.

My Flickr name is "berriff" which is my middle name and my mother's maiden name. I was surprised to be the first "David Jones" here. With a name like that you can probably guess I am Welsh (brought up in Llangefni, Anglesey). I have moved around quite a bit in my working life and we moved to the Isle of Man 12 years ago for teaching work. We are still here, and now retired. Anyway, that this is enough of an introduction for now.

Very fine and informative intro, David. You've got some lovely images in your Flickr stream David. The sky in Sailing Home to Ramsey 2 is very nice. Descending Snowdon is another fine shot. Those are just two that popped out at me; I can see you have many more good 'uns. Welcome to RPF.

Welcome to the Forum David, nice to have another aperture user onboard

Thank you Brian, Davie and Rob.

I recently tried Lightroom and found it produced better technical results for some challenging images but I did not like the interface and decided that I would be happier learning to use Aperture more effectively. It is a hobby and I want to enjoy what I do. Snapseed, desktop version, has been a revelation and it is simple enough to get to know well. It seems to have a bit of magic in its algorithms. I intend to sign up for some local Photoshop classes but until then I need to find out more about the recent Aperture updates.

I love the way Aperture 3 gives me a flow in the editing and helped develop the "style" I so often find myself in lol, I don't think I could do the same in photoshop though I do have CS5 that I only use for panorama stitching

I see there are a few musicians here so I will add that I play electric bass in a swing band and a soul/rock band. Soul Suspects

I used to teach Computer Science but that was another life. Music, road cycling and photography keep me occupied now.

Welcome David!
I and a few others here (Chris included I believe) have quite a passion for family documentary photography!
I shall look forward to seeing some shots!

The Browncoats understand. In my opinion Firefly is the best TV SciFi produced to date (sorry Doctor Who).

hmmm, toughie ... I preferred the movie (serenity) to the series whereas Doctor Who has produced some moments of GENIUS, i'm thinking Blink, Girl in the fireplace and vincent.

I have to admit though that Nathan Fillion is brilliant in Castle

I found the movie rushed but I appreciate why that had to be. Blink & Girl In The Fireplace are indeed classics and I'm going to miss Rory and Ms Pond. If it was one boxed set though it would still be Firefly. Objects In Space as the final and standout episode.

Apart from the movie, the soundtrack for Serenity is something special. David Newman wrote a truly wonderful score and the musicianship is outstanding. The DVD, but not the CD, includes a reprise of the Firefly theme to provide 5m:33s of wonderful music from "What was that?" onwards. The theme played on the cello gets me every time.

overall, as a series, i'd have to say firefly is better. doctor who seems to be slipping lately. i blame sherlock, even though i love that show too.

ditto, but you forgot the empty child and the doctor dances. and the jurys still out on the doctors wife, but it has the makings of a classic in my mind.

Thanks Pete. Fixing my problems was, in a surgical sense, straightforward, so I am grateful for the capabilities of modern medicine.

The first thing anyone who has had the cataract operation done will say is how vivid colours look, and I second that. Trying to capture the colours I see in nature is part of my motivation, although I still have a great admiration for the work of B&W photographers.

Welcome to RPF David.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes seven years ago (and further laser surgery on one of them eight months later) when I was 38 yrs old and the first thing I said was "it was like going from a knackered 40yr old tv to a brand new HD tv" the difference was so great.
