Headless Victorians - Weird!

My guess is that they created the negative then placed the head part of the negative in the correct position when printing on the enlarger?
 
Rob it may have been for real :( ? interesting find. I wonder how influence this was from the paintings, many of which depict heads severed and being held aloft, Rubens, Luini and so on. Probably more about, we can do this so why not.

A glass negative and painted on or subtracted ?
 
These are really quite weird. Some remind me of Terry Gilliam's animations for Monty Python.
 
i've heard that those old plate cameras could make you loose your head Rob....
