The latest version of LR can indeed and can cope with you disconnecting that drive as well.
Another option (the one I use in Germany where the main store is) is to use an image database. I have tried Portfolio (http://www.extensis.com/portfolio-standalone/) which I didn't get on with at the time and what has now become Media Pro (http://www.phaseone.com/en/Imaging-Software/Media-Pro.aspx) which is what I use now. The folks who wrote the image stacking software that I use also have a solution - http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconsoft-products/helicon-photo-safe/ - but I haven't tried it.
