The latest version of LR can indeed and can cope with you disconnecting that drive as well.

Another option (the one I use in Germany where the main store is) is to use an image database. I have tried Portfolio (http://www.extensis.com/portfolio-standalone/) which I didn't get on with at the time and what has now become Media Pro (http://www.phaseone.com/en/Imaging-Software/Media-Pro.aspx) which is what I use now. The folks who wrote the image stacking software that I use also have a solution - http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconsoft-products/helicon-photo-safe/ - but I haven't tried it.

I do go by date taken. It for me is a great reference. If I have a shot in Flickr or anywhere, I think I want to find the raw again to try in a new developer or whatever, the exif shows the date, I can then easily find the Raw file from the date taken. I do name the location after the date, so for instant. today's date 19-10-2013 Pentewan Lanscapes. Yes what works for oneself is what matters. I'll now keep a separate HDD just for the Raw's I think as they are irreplaceable. I do not organise through bridge, although I download through via it into the locations in the preferences. I often source through bridge as I like to take TIFF's into Camera raw to use the graduation tools sometimes. It has dawn on me of late that for very organised people Bridge has a lot to offer. LR4 has taken a back seat and I purchased Photo Ninja finding it the best high light recovery Raw converter by a long way. It is purely a raw converter without the layers and so on that CS6 or Gimp have. Ok off out the first day out for ages. Hope to catch a sunset maybe.
