Hosting nightmare

Lesley Jones

Otherwise know as Zooey
I was half way through an e-mail to 123reg about yet another mess up, but it seems pointless, so I'm asking for your combined wisdom. I've had a web site for a few years. The domain name came courtesy of an exhibition I did and I'd rather like to keep it. I did have some form of instant traffic package because I was led to believe search engines could ignore my site otherwise. As I'm in the process of removing all sales - the site is purely for me - I don't want it now (although I couldn't get 123reg to cancel).

The problems I've had over the years:

When my hosting comes up for renewal I get a reminder. I check my card details are on their system and then they fail to take the money. I get a nasty e-mail saying they are going to cancel and I have to go online and pay manually.

I can't seem to cancel the instant traffic in advance. I e-mailed them and was told if they hadn't been able to take money for the hosting, then the same would apply for the instant traffic and it would lapse. However, they do seem to be able to take the money for that - some £50 disappeared from my account in March and I'm not happy.

I've just got an e-mail reminding me the domain name is due in 60 days. I checked my card details on their web site, but some fields are blank. I filled them in, saved the form, went back in and they are blank again. AND... they have just sent me an invoice (marked as paid) for 1p!

I've really had enough, but I get very confused about all this. Is there a cheap, reliable company you can recommend and how easy is it to move? I only want to keep the domain and have enough hosting for the web site and the images I put up here. Any advice or suggestions gratefully received :)

Do you have ftp and database access Lesley?

I use Seagull as the FTP - my husband downloaded it and I believe it was free. I'm not sure what you mean about database access. I built one for myself at work and have had a paperless office for the past ten years. I think I understand that you can have a web site built on a database, but I wouldn't know how - I'm always happy to learn though. On the one hand I do like the way my site looks and I have fun tinkering with the code. I have built other sites by hand using code, but there is always some problem lurking around the corner. The current site I bought as a template from AllWebCoDesign, but I have changed pretty much everything. It's time consuming to add images, but I quite like that. I'm happy to spend time adding the back stories and finding quotes or poems. It is tricky coding when I don't have a full page though as things have to be edited in and out. Can I have the images in a database and keep the site looking much the same?

Oh... I do have trouble with the dreaded FOUC now. Ever since we moved up to Internet Explorer 9. It's not something I get using Firefox. We can't seem to fix it :(

Can't help on the website issue, Lesley, but I hope you're soon well again to resume all dancing, paragliding, bunji-jumping, bull-riding, volcano-walking, tornado-chasing, shark-fishing, spelunking, Himalaya-trekking, rabbit-husbandry and photography. :)

Get well soon Lesley - I expect you were doing the run of the bulls in Spain or something! ;)

Hope you are feeling less fragile soon Lesley.

Well it looks like you are the registered domain holder so you should be able move it to another provider - I guess Hamish can help.

I blanked your address and phone number in the above even though it is in the public entry.

So I just need to find a better provider and I can move? I did a bit of research a few weeks ago, but the reports on possible candidates were almost as bad as where I am now. I mean... have you seen the web site for 123reg? They have scroll bars within scroll bars and at the end of a session you simply can't log out. I've wasted HOURS trying to find what I want on their site and recently I was threatened with ex-communication if I didn't go and look at my stats. They send you e-mails saying if you don't want the instant traffic any more to just set it to expire, but if you go and look, that option doesn't apply. I got a help ticket and asked to cancel - that is, to not renew rather than to have money refunded and they told me I couldn't do that with a month still to run. Now if I see anything in my inbox from them I get all...

I can host it for you Lesley ... Would I be good enough? ;)

Give me a ring tomorrow day on the office number (follow the link to f8creates at the bottom) and we can talk about how to sort it for you ...

Even if you don't have hosting from our re-seller account I will put you on to the company who we use who are probably one of the best in the uk, very reliable and actually a good bunch of blokes!
I could also then move the site onto that hosting for you ... Gratis of course!

... I could also sort your email so it is hosted by google so you can cut all ties to 123reg (bar the domain renual... And even that can be solved by contacting nominet)

(((Hamish))) you are a hero! I had no idea you did that, but I would be more than happy to move. I have enough on my plate what with the zoo, work and now my husband being sent all over the country. My head is always full of blood tests and treatments - at the moment we're trying to clear the llamas of liver fluke and today I find our pig could have it too. I need to get samples, order another injection for one of our cats, monitor our diabetic cat and adjust drug doses for a ferret with a heart problem. Basically I just need a quiet life everywhere else! :)

There is only one request - can you e-mail me instead of getting me to phone? It's hard to explain, but I have been so utterly exhausted for years that I can't cope with phone calls. I have no family left to ring and I don't get many calls at work. I find them stressful. E-mails are easy because I can check them umpteen times before pressing send and then I don't make a complete idiot of myself. :)

You have my e-mail address already, don't you?

I already look like a complete idiot - of course the f8 site mentions hosting. I had seen it before. I have a mind like a sieve at the moment... :D

I just want to say that Hamish is a top bloke :)
