Got my iPhone 4s

Initial impression review coming soon later...

Very well documented, thats pretty cool. What app did you use for the video?

Ha! Just imagine if you forgot to input the word 'apple'......... :D :D

Actually, no. The thing is I find most of Apple products I own work so well, I no longer feel the need to frequently upgrade my gears. I have gained a sense of relief and freedom since I stop feeling bad about the scratches and dings on my iPhone 3Gs. I'm kinda enjoying this new found "freedom", I think I will stick to it until it literally disintegrates in my hand :D.

Haha you talk about it like I talk about the freedom from my Hifi upgrade "addiction"
I'm perhaps not that bad with the iPhone ... I was due and needed(my 4 was on its last legs) an upgrade and thought that being as I do some articles for this place I have an excuse to try and get one early! Plus, Greg wanted one which sort off egged me on a bit ...
Ita a bit of fun anyway eh...

Hey Hamish, someone on that video - & I'm assuming it's you - towards the end says "there is a good reason for me doing this." Do you care to elaborate what the reason is? I’m hoping that maybe it’ll help me better understand this whole iPhone craze, something I’ve no shame in admitting that I just don’t get. I’ve seen people queuing at stupid-o-clock in the morning for say inoculations… food… shelter… but for a smartphone. I appeal to you/challenge you to help me understand! You up for that? Oh, and don’t even try to peddle the ‘it’s a camera’ defense. That won’t wash with me. Ha. Nice video, by the way!

I like the iPhone, and I back it's corner to a point if that is challenged ... But really only to a point!
If I had an android phone, had been using android phones for the same time as I had been iPhones I would no doubt feel the same about them... As a phone!
At the en of the day, it's a little computer that has become an integral part of my life! But really and honestly, I'm not an apple freak!
Last year I went to get my iPhone 4 on the second delivery at the o2 shop, I ended up in a queue for hours ... I actually got very annoyed as they kept on saying "they will be here in ten mins" I was at the front of the queue, and once I had been there for half an hour I felt like I had committed to it! I was there for 5 hours! I was angry when I left, with my self, O2, apple! But as I expected I was very happy with the phone!
I swore I would never queue again!
This year came round, my iPhone a year and a few months old was on its last legs ... It does all sorts of odd things, despite being reset to factory setting etc numerous times!
I would class my self as a heavy user, I use my contracted 1200 minutes and about 900mb of 3G Internet a month, that's not including the time I spend on it on wifi! It's my business phone, my personal phone and for most part my link to the forum (this is why I can go ages not commenting on images ... I don't tend to so much on my iPhone then do it in chunks when I look at them on my pc)
This thing has become an integral part of my life, not because it is apple, but because it's very useful, and does the things it does with ease... As I said I would feel the same about an android one im sure!

So why queue? why let it be more than a phone?
This year, Greg was due for his upgrade, he has had a 3GS which was very knackered!
He suggested we queue, I told him bollocks! But then I decided it would be nice to do a camera review for the forum on the release day...
Then we chatted about making a video about getting up early and it seemed like a fun idea!

To be honest, it was actually exciting getting up at a silly hour marching down there, drinking loads of really strong coffee and having a laugh with the other people in the queue!

I think there are a few types of people who do it...
The obsessed, who just really want the new one to show off to their mates etc ... These are the type that don't realise that there is an alternative and will fight apples corner to the death!
Thens there are the people who just want to be part of something ...
The intrigued ... There was a girl who happened to hear there was a queue and thought sod it ... I guess she is part of the "want to be part of something" group
Then there is me, and you would be surprised how many people who seemed to be in this group in the queue... Who were just there because it was a bit exciting and actually oddly quite a lot of fun!

I'd do it again, I don't mind being mocked, people have this "I'm above that sort of thing" attitude, well from experience I'd say that would need to chill out! There is nothing wrong with being a part of any of the above groups of people (maybe with the exception of the people who defend apple to the death ... That's just odd).
If you don't get it, I can completely understand that! I would have probably agreed with you a few days ago, but now I would say there is a lot of reasons why people do these things ... It's not as simple as iPhone obsessed idiots!

Tom Brookes pointed out to me the other day that the video has a bit of an anticlimactic ending ... I'd not thought about it, but he is right!
It's a video of the experience, not really about the phone! I think that it probably sums up my feelings about it all better than I had originally thought!
It's just a phone at the end of the day, but there is a lot that comes along with it if you choose to embrace it! And why not? It doesn't hurt anyone!

Ultimately its the most ingenious marketing campaign of our time, it's a lifestyle, it has broad appeal beyond the nurd... and how was it done?
Simplicity, simple design and simple functionality and simple advertising!
IMO It is the ultimate evolution of Warhol's coke bottle... So much more than just a bottle of coke!?

Choose to try to ignore it, mock it or embrace it... One way or another it's become part of our lives! Something that will always rouse interest even from those who simply don't understand what all the fuss is about ... Like your self! :)

for me the the design by Jon Ive is up there with the great Jacob Jensen for Bang & Olufsen in the 70's, and the build quality is AMAZING

It does feel like a solid well build bit of kit!
My iPhone 4 is in basically new cosmetic condition ... The screen is seemingly mark proof!
They are certainly tactile!
It's funny, I always wondered how they could make it look better than the original style .. Then the 4 came out ...
I have a fascination with things that are perfectly designed... The zippo lighter is one, perfect design in my books.... The iPhone comes close to that sort of thing, the only thing holding it back from that is the lack of moving parts! Mechanical things are somehow more satisfying IMO
