I was sent this in an email this morning ... Im not quite sure what conclusions to draw from it, but it is interesting non the less...

Here's a "fair" test between the iPhone 4S and the Canon 5D MK II. I made a little rig that allowed me to shoot both cameras at the same time side by side. All scenes are perfectly synced together so you can pause and scrutinize the frames! See photo of the makeshift rig in the photo area....

I am not going to pretend I know a lot about filming. But in my opinion there doesn't seem to be £1000 difference between the two!!!! Whilst we're on the subject. Do you know much about shooting footage using DSLRs? It's just something I am thinking about experimenting with - we still need to do our short films we planned to do about 2 years ago!

I know mate! ...
Fancy trying to do them with an iphone? ;)
I'll be looking at getting a video enabled slr at some stage ... although not an slr maybe the nikon V1/J1 would be the ideal!!
another reason to get one ... damit!

I have to admit to not knowing a great deal about it

this is fairly insightful http://www.realphotographersforum.com/content/431-nice-reflection-state-art-phil-holland.html

Did you see my iphone morning vid?

i'd like to see the video difference between the 4 and 4s video.... i wonder if you get a rig of sorts to stabilise the phone when videoing

It's funny you say that...
I've been mulling over a stabiliser ...
I think a monopod with a weight at the bottom would at least help!
I've also just bought the gorillamobole which would fit the iPhone to the mono pod ...
Maybe a grip release ball head on the monopod for a bit of swingingness too
I'll report back when I'm a bit further with the idea!

Intersting. I guess with faster action there might be more issues and there is something going on the sampling but otherwise it is pretty impressive. I guess the DoF comparison would show why people use 5D's etc and maybe a fairer comparison would have been a digicam with a smaller sensor. But for the price (and given that it's a phone after all), it's impressive. The scanning issue on the video advertising is interesting - I wonder if that is actually a recording artifact (it does look rolling shutter related) or an attempt to stop recording from video / cinema.

To be fair - I don't think the demo footage is really showing you anything useful

The key with the 5D2 for video is that you can use the super fast L lenses for narrow DOF shooting, with superb optical quality.

This is not shown in the demo sequences, so really they're completely missing the point.

I think your looking at this from the wrong perspective Chris
What it's trying to point out is that the iPhone is capable of good results closer than some might expect in certain circumstances to kit FAR FAR higher speced than it ... I'm not sure any comment on the 5dii is intended...
The 5d does have some very distinct and obvious advantages especially under those creative video situations that you point out
