Ha ha ha!! Bless! :)
And look at the DOF on that!!! Amazing!
I am looking to invest in an Olympus OM 50mm 1.4, shouldnt be anymore than a £100, looking at the DOF on here it certainly has tempted me to put my hands in my pocket.
Nice shot dude. Very cute :)

Lovely Chris!
Who says you can't take lovely (I think the word you use is ;)) intimate portraits with a wide lens!
It really suits the square crop eh, you loose some of the width of the lens but retain the feel!

Dan, you won't gain that much less dof from a 1.4 compared to a 1.8 ... Especially on your smaller format camera! There will be an effect, but it will mostly just make manual focus harder! If you want to achieve shots like Chris's it's all about using a wider lens, a 50 mm on your camera will be a 100mm equiv, "perfect" for "traditional style" portraiture, but a far cry from this style!
Try setting your lens to 14mm and get in very close!
According to my calculator at 50cm from the subject you will have 13cm of dof at 3.5 with your Olympus, so you should find you get fairly satisfactory OOF behind you subject... Even if its not quite as oof as Chris's... It will still have the feel, and you can always add to the oof with the selective adjustment brush in Lightroom!

they are really cheap Dan, i never went for the 50mm but the 28mm instead ... which is what i used for the thistle shot with the insane DOF :)

Dan - it was looking at the shots taken with this lens by Chuck Anerino, that convinced me that it should be my next target.

On the full-frame 5D2 - it provided a different perspective, and creative DOF - and I wanted that capability added to my kit bag.

Chuck posted a great intro on DPR called 'Family Photographers: Shoot Wide Primes!' - and followed that up with more detail in his photoblog, The Family Photojournalist:

Since I read the original DPR post, I've been on a collision course with the 24mm f1.4L. :)

Hopefully you can get to the same look and feel with a suitable prime for your Oly - it's well worth holding out for.

Thanks for the tip guys.
My 50mm 1.8 is hard enough to focus as it is manually, so come to think about it. I might have a look into a 28mm as Davie had mentioned.
I love the close up potraiture shots on a wide angle lens. :)
Can anyone recommend me an ultra wide angle lens (off the subject a bit sorry)?
I've looked into the Zuiko E.D lenses and I'm not (at this moment) looking into spending a bomb.... is there an Ultra wide angle for the an OM fit??

Tamron adaptall ii 17mm 3.5 sp can be OM mount
The problem is, your 2x crop ... So your 14-45 will still be wider
You could look at the 7-14 mm f4 oly 4/3rds lens?

But I really dot think new glass is the answer here!
The just isn't such a lens as a 12mm 1.4 lens which would give you the same fov as Chris ... And even at 1.4 it would still not have as shallow dof as Chris has because of it actually being a 12mm lens!

Why don't you try and emulate Chris's photo? Just limit your shooting to the 14mm end of your lens on aperture priority at 3.5 ... That's the closest fov you will get to Chris's photo without spending any cash and you might be supprised what you get!

A monkey maybe? ;)

Adrian - I came dangerously close last night, but luckily Barbie stepped in and deflected her sticky fingers! :D
