ISAMBARD BRUNEL ROYAL ALBERT BRIDGE

In the black and white version, the low-lying clouds look like industrial steam, which seems to resonate with the steel bridge. And what an odd bridge it is! I can see in it a mini version of the famous Forth Bridge near Edinburgh.

Is that an aqueduct in the background?

Rob the bridge in the background is the Rail line into Cornwall. That is the vllage of Saltash. the rail crossing is an odd structure. When I used to cross the road bridge adjacent to railway, you cannot see the lower part where the train track is, just the upper part with the tube like structure. As a child I used to think 'How the eak does the train go into that tube and down onto the track again' Fortunately or maybe not so fortunately for mankind, I now know I was not the only child who used to ponder this.

A copy including the road bridge.

looks a bit like a deluxe hamster cage, the ones with the optional tube set. nice post processing, has an hdr feel to it, but it doesn't look overcooked.

Beth I know what you mean about HDR look. That is the most frustrating thing I find with digital. I have taken photos which in some light, take on the appearance of HDR, which is by far not my favorite look. My guess is that the dynamic range is such that the sensor captures it all, which in turn gives that look. Or that the raw files are manipulated too much by Adobe or even the camera? Not a subject i know much about, I would prefer blown out highlights rather than HDR.

I like both the colour and BW versions Julian and wonder if they could do with a thin black frame like in Robs photo but maybe 1/4 the thickness? It is nice to let your eye wonder around the image and take in all the different things like the reflections, buildings and the little boat peek out from between two of the bridges legs.

That's a nice image Rob, I have probably seen it before. I really like the way it is weighted to the left and right and seems to pull in both directions.

colour for me, the bridge is a thing of beauty

That bridge is ugly as sin. But I can see why Davie finds beauty in it, and I imagine it is cherished by the natives. I think your image of it is a very good one, Julian. Lots going on in that fotie and I like the tones a lot.

Interesting - that road bridge is not unlike the Forth Road Bridge as well.

A bit bigger and further apart...but the shapes are not dissimilar...

Between Two Bridges by RobMacKillop, on Flickr

Rob that is a superb image. The bridges frame the space between, which is for me, of the greatest interest. The space would not be the same space without the bridges. I understand what I mean ...

LOL. I know what you mean too! Sorry to gatecrash your thread with one of my images, but it did strike me how similar they were.

i like your processing. but if you're unhappy then try adding in some extra contrast. if you shoot raw and use acr or lr try darkening your shadows and blacks.
