Jessop's York

I must admit i buy most things online as they are usually much cheaper, luckily i have never had any bad issues that haven't been promptly dealt with.

During early part of this week i had a few days in Scarborough and then a day & over night in York. I also visited whitby as i couldnt wait to see the abbey ruins on the hill overlooking town, i climbed up god knows how many steps (alot) paid my £6 entrance and went to grabs some photos. My 17-85mm packed up on me instantly and thus i had to use the sigma 10-20 for these photos and for the rest of the day :-( This put me on a major downer...........lol

Anyhow while walking around York the day after i popped into Jessops to see what they had, now usually i wouldn't even dream of going into this company's shop as form experience they are always way over priced compared to my usual internet companies.

To my surprises they had some good stock & range of canon lens available, i was looking to repalce my faulty lens.......... then the beauty of the 24-70mm F2.8 L lens was there and it jumped out at me..........i have dreamt of this lens for soooooooooooo long...!!

The shop assistance came over and i just had to have this lens, they had 2 in stock. He answered all my question without hesitation and he seemed very knowledgeable of the products telling me everything i needed to know.

It was priced at £1159.00 so i asked him if that was the best price he could do for me, after a few mins he returned and said he could do it for £1029.00 a great saving i thought just for asking........although he had matched their internet price. Which incendently says on there site "Prices Are Not Cannot Be Matched In Store"

I walked away a very happy chap & couldn't wait to put this lens on my camera and i most certainly now after this experience take a look in my local store for my next purchase.

(thanks for sticking with this if you have got this far, i am not that good with words but just thought i woulds share my experience with RPF)

That's great to hear Darren - I used to use the flagship Jessops store in Leicester back in the day, and had both good and bad experiences, depending on who I got to talk to.

Sounds like the York store has at least got some decent staff, and moved with the times on price matching.

Back in Leicester, we had Jessops and Cecil Jacobs to trade off against each other (pre InterWebs) so used to work a deal between the two big stores in order to get a bargain.

Here in San Diego we have Calumet, which on my last visit had little or no Canon L lens stock, and seemed to have almost given up.

We also have a couple of smaller stores, which seem to try harder, and have that personal touch. Not tried them on pricing yet.

I hope camera stores can adjust to the market, and stay in business - nothing beats walking out with a lens or camera in your hands :)

... and of course this entirely matches my experience (see my other thread on Jessops in Birmingham) where I was given a price match to the internet price without even asking!

well i saved £130 just for asking...........makes me wonder if the would have offered the discount if i hadn't of asked........yes i read that Tim just after you posted it........maybe Jessops are getting there act together.........EVENTUALLY

If they wont match their own website price in store the answer is easy, use your smart phone to order online and collect in store :)
Only done this once but it saved a bit of money on a last minute compact camera purchase just hours before going on holiday.

My local store in Beverley is excellent, the manager is always friendly and helpful. :)
