Kazuko takes revenge on Barbie

Pete Askew's recent "Dark Spaces" image of a doll reminded me of a scary doll we were given many years ago. I named her Kazuko (和子 - literally 'Japan child' - a common girl's name) and hid her, in her case, in a cupboard. Soon after I read the background to the famous song known as "Sukiyaki" in the West (Japanese title "ue o muite arukou"), written by Rokusuke Ei (1933–2016) to express his sadness at the signing of the treaty between the USA and Japan giving in particular the right to permanent bases in Japan. I thought there must have been many Japanese saddened and angry about the change of direction and culture for Japan after the war. I decided to let Kazuko take her revenge on the archetypal USA girl doll, Barbie.

8x10 pinhole photo on Velvia. 和子maintained her expressionless unemotional face while Barbie's head was swinging from her arm.

Took a hot minute to spot that Barbie head! Thanks for the history Geoff to accompany the photo
