This is the view looking South East from a lookout position in Joshua Tree - hazy with smog that's blown in from LA, but still an amazing sight.

Portrait panorama mode ... What's that then?

Portrait panoramas are where you mount the camera vertically, but then pan left-right to build a panorama from multiple frames in portrait orientation. Works a treat!

The foreground desert is covered with scrub, giving it that nice texture, a bit like desert stubble!

It was bloody cold and windy up on the lookout - we were all rushing back to the car after 10 minutes to warm up

Thanks Pete - maybe one day I'll get to it at sun-up or sunset, although park hours and the distance from civilization make it a little challenging.

Chris, this location has a lot of potential. What's it like at sunrise?

Looking at the plot, looks like sunrise would be over my left shoulder looking out on this view - so promising

Park only opens at 8am though, so not sure if I could get in to get the shot

Although I shot sunrise in another area of the park another time, so I goes I must have been able to drive in somehow....

Just leave the camera there on a tripod and set the interval timer. It'll be fine!!
