Is there much scope for changing viewpoint? I wonder whether you could get the bright central part flat against one edge...?

I almost agree Pete, but it could be repaired with the clone tool

True, but I'd want to lose the dark edge too and I usually try to avoid adding things to an image with Smart Fill etc.
