Let's Talk Diffusers

I plan doing some macro/close up botanical shots over the spring, and feel the acquisition of a diffuser would help. I've just been on Amazon to see what is available, and there are hundreds of different kinds. I suppose I'm looking for hand-held. But, then again, if I am to do close-up work well, I'll be using a tripod. So, a tripod attachment might come in handy. The diffuser doesn't have to be big. They seem to range from really cheap to REALLY expensive, so what's the difference?

The big difference is in colour correction. The diffusers from Lastolite and California Sunbounce are colour neutral. Others will be close (probably close enough) but may yellow over time. This will probably not be an issue for you though. I would recommend a lighting stand and clamp (ideally a flexible arm) as this will take a lot of frustration out of your shoots.

Thanks, guys. I knew I could rely on you! Still, that's £80 just to get rid of strong highlights and soften the light overall. Alternatives? I know - shoot in the morning or end of day. But I often find the only time I have free is around midday, when the light can be harsh.

I can see Dan's got the buzz! :D

Lastolite stuff is good - CA Sunbounce is good but I remember them being expensive when I was looking for a scrim
