Levitated Mass

By artist Michael Heizer.

It's on the grounds at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

According to the LACMA website, the artist conceived the project in 1969, but a suitable rock wasn't found until decades later.

They found the rock in Riverside County, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles. It weighs an estimated 340 tons. Chris and Darren B and Nihat and any other RPFrs in the Southern California area may remember when the rock was transported through the streets a couple of years ago to some fanfare (although nothing like the fanfare and ballyhoo that accompanied the Space Shuttle on its journey through the streets of LA last year.)

Mamiya 7 and expired Kodak Portra 800.

Run away! It's crushing everything in it's path!

Very nice Brian - keep meaning to pop by and see this museum

Is it the one with the street lamp installation out front?

Thanks, Chris. Yes, it's the one with all the street lamps. We went to see the Stanley Kubrick exhibition (which has ended now). That was great. But we didn't get enough of the rest of LACMA, so I think we might head up there on the 4th to see more. Thanks again, Chris.

Bloody hell - I drove past it yesterday on the way to a customer!

It's on my to do list :)

The scale thing in your photo keeps drawing me back - the girl then the distant figures then the HUGE rock
