Lighting Painting in Gheluvelt Park

I went to Gheluvelt Park this weekend to experiment with light painting. I took more stuff than I needed but sadly I didn't take my tripod as it weighs a tonne so used a light stand with a lighting bracket so apologies for the less than crisp photos [doh]

This is a shot of the tree at dusk with some test light painting with a torch:

As you can see it was good and dark ;)

This is one of my more successful images, shot hand holding two Canon flashes at about 1/8 power:

I didn't take photos that many as it was damn cold and my remote shutter release battery was flat, but I've got a new, lighter tripod on order and plan to return soon :)

I did some with a torch lighting the tree but it was quicker with a flash (I even tried some with my homemade-from-straws grid :D ) as the tree was quite tall. I couldn't really do the "traditional" light painting with the torch into the camera as there's pond directly behind the tree.. almost but not quite walked backwards into it.. [doh]

Oooohh, you and me have got to go out in the night some time!
Light painting is right up my street :)

DD you Tart, you promised to go out with me. pfft see what happens, i guess it's just because I'm different and paint with light and don't do the light painting thing.....:-)

There's a couple of other techniques I want to try as soon as I've bought the lights. I ended up using the speedlights as I'm small and the tree was quite big - the torch gave a much more subtle look but I preferred the slightly starker look from the speedlights. Tempted to try try some back lighting from the other side of the pond with an Elinchrom next time as well...

@Dan - I'll be in touch :)
