I tried this the other morning at 6am, and couldn't see a bloody thing to compose and focus on

This is actually right outside the hotel over the road, i was stood on the hotel car park lol
Just aimed & hoped for best Chris, focused to infinity manually.
Was amazed how light it came out to be honest as it was complete darkness black & i couldn't see a thing with no light pollution at all & i wanted it a bit darker next time possible, will jump up to about F8 see what that's like.
I also gonna try this at the end of the lake on the next clear night & try find some star constellations if possible

If it wasn't for the stars I would have thought it was taken during daylight, a bit too much light pollution to try that here I think...
(No nice looking hills or mountains either[doh]).

I really like this Darren. I tried it at home last year and couldn't see to compose or focus either. I went indoors for the half hour exposure and then had to flounder around the garden in the dark trying to find the tripod!

i take a flashlight for the comp. so i can see where the edge of my photos are. whether the flashlight has batteries is a different story.. and manually focus at infinity.
at least the sheep are still and calm. great exposure, love the different tones in the sky.
glen, i'm in the same boat. adirondacks were too bright, not sure about what's north of you, but shenandoah is probably the closest place south of you.

It has a nice quality to the light I think probably as it is not what we are used to seeing.
