Derelict fishing boat on the salt marshes of Lincolnshire taken using a Pentax 645 with standard lens and Kodak T-Max 100 processed using Paterson FX39 developer. This place takes around thirty minutes to walk to across the salt marsh but when you get there, the sense of otherworldliness is overwhelming. This place is so remote and so flat and endless.

I shot this image with a red filter which was a huge mistake but I plan on returning in a few weeks and shooting with a yellow/green instead. This should hopefully produce an infinitely better photograph. The severely limited depth of field was intentional and will feature on the next shot in a few weeks. Images like this make me wish I still printed in a darkroom.

Interesting shot and place Shaun. I think you may want to try keeping most of the boat in focus...a little lower angle...on a least one shot of your retry. Just a thought.

Why was a red filter such a massive mistake?

I quite like it, I like the narrow dof, it somehow adds to the feeling of the alien environment somehow ...

My only quibble would be with the slightly off level horizon ... but thats coming from someone who agonises over levelness far too much!

I too quite like the shallow DoF but I'd be tempted to include a bit more of the landscape even though it would be mostly out of focus. At present I find the composition a touch closed in, especially with the narrow area of focus. What colour is the ground? Are you wanting that to be a darker tone?

The red filter was such a mistake as it boosted the contrast far too much and closed out a lot of the midtones. The foreground was sand so is a sort of sand colour and yes, again, the shallow depth of field was done intentionally to close in the image. Yes I agree, the boat needed a bit more space around it but there you go, I only took it from differing angles with more space and this was the best angle. Yes I agonise over how an horizon should look in the final image. Does one want an off kilter boat or an off kilter horizon...? I'm still never sure about this one. I certainly have a few ideas for when I go back and shoot it again. I am also hoping to shoot using Fuji Acros the next time I go so that should improve things even more.

Here is another view of the same boat. Unfortunately this also has a red filter on it but is taken from a different angle and may be more acceptable to some.

Unfortunately I was sat on the sand when I took this photograph so I can't actually get any lower. It is a shame that the sand has built up around the boat so as to form a raised area.

What an amazing location - it will be interesting to see your vision of the green filtered shot compared the the red filter shot we've seen here.

The red does give the highlights an ethereal feel, which I like.

However - shooting Fuji Acros sounds like a superb idea - I LOVE Fuji Acros

Can't wait :)
