Medieval Brig, Berwick

When James VI of Scotland became James I of England, he travelled through Berwick, and thought they should have a bridge. So, here it is, a few years later, though why they call it medieval (it's actually early 17th-century) is anybody's guess. DP1 Merrill.

Perhaps they call it medieval because there were several other bridges on the site before it? (However, point well-taken: Early 17th C is not classified as being in the Middle Ages.)

Possibly, Brian. But I've lost count of the number of times I've been described as playing medieval music when I play 17th-century lute music. Ah well, I don't lose sleep over it.

You can actually see three bridges here. The 'medieval', the 1950s road bridge, and in the distance the great 19th-century rail bridge.

Had this image been colour, Pete, it wouldn't have been much different. The light was very great, as was the water and the bridge. Still, it was a beautiful grey!
