They were actually like that. In times of patronage, competition was immense. Few of them liked each other. I don't mean these particular composers, as they were not around at the same time. But generally it's true, competition was, and is, fierce.

Yep true. I am always amused at the saying 'in my day' as if it way any different, maybe the artefacts but that is about all.
Although not an educator and found music lessons blindingly boring, a good way to make such subjects relevant for youngsters.
