Dave, I know I can't really speak (due to lack of experience), but I found it easier to do street photography of people after I done it on my phone camera. You can make it look like you are struggling to see the screen, texting, or generally just messing with your phone.. People stay natural too, it's a phone after all
That's what helped me get the confidence to get the dslr out..

The camera was effectively sat on my knees pointing in their general direction. Set to discrete mode, no noise is generated during the shot. Zone focusing makes it easy.
