Nikon 24mm F2.8 ?

Has anyone used the Nikon 24mm F2.8D? I'm really interested in that focal length but I sure can't afford the $2000 Nikon 24mm. I just don't like all those online reviewers. I trust people on this forum. Thanks!! Steve B.

What would you be looking to use it for Steve?

It would be on D700. Knowing me I'll use it for getting really close to the dogs and probably for a photo thing I want to do driving around to small towns close to where I live. I have a 20mm F3.5 and a 28mm F2.8. Silly as it sounds I would like something in between. There are a couple of shots in this little town called Bartlett I could see using it for. Does that make any sense?

Well, the reviews will probably tell you it vignettes wide open and is sharpest stopped down ... I remember similar, but not really to the extent I have read today.
id say for pictures of dogs shot wide open it will take nice photos!
Landscapes it does well ... Very small and light weight ... I thought it was a good lens!
I sold mine after I bought the 24-70 which to my mind at the time did a better job in the sharpness department wide open ... All be it with similar levels of vignetting ...

my advice, unless you have a stack of cash and don't mind the weight of the 24-70 ... Just buy one! You won't loose anything on it if you sell it again!

I have the 24-70 but it's just SOOOOOOOOO big. It does work nicely on the Fuji S5 though. It's a great lens. I just hate lugging it around. Most of the times when I go hiking with the dogs we go for at least 5 hours. So I would like to take the 24, 35, and 50. I think I'm going to get the 24 F2.8. I don't care if it vignettes, I kind of like vignetting (I guess that's strange). Anyway, I really appreciate both your thoughts. You guys are really good photographers and don't seem to have a bias.

Pete- That's the same way I use it most of the time, no kidding. 24 or 70. :D

Oddly, I almost never use it at its extremes ... Certainly not the 24 end ... The 70 sometimes ... It's my wedding lens ...
i don't even use it for non wedding events anymore, the 28 1.8 does a much better job. Too big, too heavy!

I like a bit of vignetting too :)

Sigma 24mm f2.8 i once had, having read some pretty good reviews. Some saying it is on a par with Nikon 24mm F2.8 (which version i cant recall), or pretty close to it. Sigma AF on the 24 is slooow & grindy colours are a bit cool (i liked).
Considering the price difference (i think the Sigma is around £80, i got mine approx £40 manual focus version) i think it is some lens.

When I shot Pentax I had a Sigma 24mm. The colors were very cool on it. There is one on Ebay for Nikon. I'm may give it some consideration since I got outbid on the Olympus XA I was bidding on. I had to be at my sister's house for some horrid ham and equally dangerous corn souffle when the bidding ended. Que sera.....

Steve, I own a 24mm f2.8 Nikkor and have had this lens for a lot of years. It is a very good lens and should excel on a D700. I have seen pictures using this lens with a D800 and was very impressed. It is light and easy to carry. The picture is not the best but is one I took with the lens a couple of months back. I have put this in at a lower resolution, if you need more let me know.

Little did I realise that we would have our works Christmas party aboard her!

A chap on another forum has been using one on his D800 and I think the first shot (in B&W) is with the 24. Mark Littlejohn

As Hamish suggets you won't lose much if anything.
