Nikon AFS 80-200mm F2.8 FX & DX?

am I right in saying that the old AFS 80-200mm F2.8 (two rings, focus hold buttons, but no VR), which I think was sold about the same time as the F5, is compatible with full frame and crop sensor cameras?

any cameras it doesn't work with? thinking D700/7000/D3s/D3/D600

Yes, and it should work on all of those.

You can use it with a full frame sensor BUT it would crop the image it should have worked with the D7000 as that has a crop sensor anyway Been reading up about what lenses will work with a D80

The early ones at least were designed for use on film cameras Dave and so will cover the full frame of a D3 etc. They will give an equivalent view to a 120-300mm on the D7000.

in the end it turned out that the 'slightly cheaper' AFS lens I was looking at, had an AFS motor that was about to conk out, and only at a saving of maybe GBP100 over the next least expensive one. I am fairly sure the motors are quite a lot more than one hundred pounds to replace, so false economy.

in the end I went for the tried and tested one touch lens, the first model, but still adequate for my humble uses. and bargain priced, under two hundred quid.

Blimey if it was under £200 it was a steal never mind a bargain & it is longer focal length than the version 2 that is out now to boot.
