It depends on the particular street, Rob. As you can see from the sign (and the parked cars), on this street you are supposed to park partly on the verge between the road and the pavement (sidewalk). The soil is very sandy in Brandenburg and so the grass is sparse at best, so doesn't suffer as such. It's a problem everywhere, as the late 19th and early 20th century apartment buildings were not built with cars in mind (new ones have underground parking). The problem is exacerbated when they 'restore' them and stuff apartments into the attics (which has happened opposite). Our buildings are owned by the grandson of the man who built them and we still have attics. And this is in a city with relatively low rates of car ownership - at least compare with the UK.
