Or more accurately a country blood sport. A strong reminder of a barbaric practise carried out by participants with nothing better to do. The image has a strong rural feel to it.

I believe that it brings food on the table too in certain circumstances Tom, also to poor ones. Maybe they were poachers? Very well captured though in the decisive moment of time. But sport, well.......
