What does leave the chimneys? We have many here at a port, which on first glance appear to be letting out large amounts of pollution, where as it is steam from the clay drying kilns. Quite dramatic and against a dark sky very photogenic.

Lots of CO2. Cement making is one on the major sources of human-related CO2 discharges. I saw a figure once that claimed production of a ton of cement produced a ton of CO2.

I see John thanks a cement plant. Yes I realise cement is a major pollutant for us.

Thank you for your interest and nice comments friends. Yes as John so elegantly said, cement pipes and they are great pollutants in this world them factories. This one is owned by the second largest Cement producer in the world, the German Heidelberg group. Now we have 25 metric miles/ 250 km of mines under our feet. The limestones are no longer in a multitude, so after 100 years of extracting limestones, it is no longer profitable but. A new plant which imports toxic waste from elsewhere in Europe wants to fill those mines with exactly that, toxic waste and our government seems to go for that idea. One company, owned by one single man who in turn bought the same company from our government in 2003, and has had a profit of 800 millions Norwegian kroner / £ 63 million. In a vicinity of 50 meters and onwards from where 2500 people live as well as another 6000 people a little to the north on top of the mines. Together with others, I fight this by producing articles with pictures, doing research and links to EU councils etc and we are backed by our communal councils. We are going to be on national tv on Monday. Sorry for boring you with the details.
