Portrait taken with Fuji X-10 (mini review)

I've had more cameras than most people have had hot dinners, and I was going to get a Nikon V1 as an ultralight system but a camerashop owner and friend persuaded me to get this instead.
Now I'm well used to very good kit, with Canon 1Dsiii and 1Div my standard current bodies, but I do like a small camera, or indeed small handy cameras as well. My current smallest is a Canon S90.

This Fuji is extraordinary. There is an "issue" with it which is burning the photography forum about "orbs". These are small overblown hightlights which can have a hard edge and you can reproduce them (I have) but they are not any problem in my photography and I wouldn't have even noticed them in the odd occasion I've seen them, had I not read about them.

What I find extraordinary about this Fuji is the instant shutter, the quick autofocus, the really fast lens, the fact that you can opt for 6mp and get very low noise, or increased dynamic range. The lens is as sharp as you get on a small camera. Don't use F11 as there's serious diffraction. Sharp from wide open to F8. Very slight diffraction at f8.

Anyway, the above snapshot gives and idea of how good it is.

It has a superb LCD with all kinds of aids, including a level, and a simple optical viewfinder with no info at all. I would use this for following action.

... There is a great level of detail in that shot, especially concidering it's a compact camera!
How well does the switching to 6mp reduce noise of increase dr? I've not seen any specific examples yet and it does intrigue me!

it is a nice little carry around everyday camera isn't it Garry, pops in the pocket and very quick...Must admit to liking mine :)

I've easily had 150 cameras in my time, and it's a huge favourite already. I much prefer it to my Canon S90, and that's not a bad camera.
I've C1 set up for full res, 100 asa and Velvia simulation.
C2 Auto 1600, 400%DDR and Medium size.
They are VERY handy.

That is quite impressing i think for such a little camera ...
It is of course the one advantage of small sensors, if they are good then you can get broad dof in low light!

I regard this serious DOF as a feature of such cameras and something to be used as a strength..

agreed, with bells on!
I, for the most part, dislike small sensor cameras, but like all cameras they have thier uses ... this one looks like it its a lot better than the average small(er) sensored camera
