Published photos

Once in a while, I get asked by publishers to use my photos in their books (I usually agree in exchange for a copy of the book and a licensing fee). It's usually pretty random and I never really even know how much to ask for, to be honest. Anyway, I currently have photos in three published books:

This one is in a book by Rizzoli that came out in March of 2011 on the architect David Adjaye:
Amazon.com: David Adjaye: A House for an Art Collector (9780847835089): David Adjaye, Adam Lindemann, Peter Allison, Robert Polidori, Lyndon Douglas: Books

And this one in another Rizzoli book by Sandy Hill called Mountain:
Amazon.com: Mountain: Portraits of High Places (9780847834020): Sandy Hill, Raul Barrenche, Robert Macfarlane, Jennifer Jordan, Nando Parrado: Books

And this one I did as a favor to a local brewery that published a book recently:
Amazon.com: The Craft of Stone Brewing Co.: Liquid Lore, Epic Recipes, and Unabashed Arrogance (9781607740551): Greg Koch, Steve Wagner, Randy Clemens: Books

Anyone else have experience with this they can share to help?

I don't. But I'd dearly love to get in on that brewery gig Darren! ;)

Great foties by the way! (How dide they find your work and know to ask?)

That shot in the snow is insane!

And I do recognize Stone Brewery - I've errr, had a few pints there myself! :D :D

Do you send stuff in to the mags, or do they come find you?

Thanks, Chris. I've never gone out of my way to submit anything. They always seem to find me. Every few months or so, I get an e-mail out of the blue from some editor / author / journalist / student who has seen one of my photos on Flickr or some blog, and asks me for permission to use it in their publication. That was the case for all three that I mentioned above.

I've been asked by a birdwatching magazine if I could send a hi-res copy of a shot for possible publication and a countryside team asked about a photograph of a Kestrel I had for a notice board, but I never heard anymore from them so I presume the shots weren't up to standard for them:o.

But I've had a couple used on websites in the past and one used in a presentation.

Good work Darren!
Looking forward to getting out with the tilty shifty lens from Pete ... I fear I have a steep learning curve to get close to this ... Never mind find places as interesting as these!

@Glen: I get requests too that never seem to go anywhere. I assume that means they ask for more stuff than they intend to use and mine fall by the wayside. Oh well!

@Hamish: Thanks, mate. TS lenses are actually a lot easier to use than they appear - it's pretty straight forward. And in any case, an experienced photographer like you should have no trouble at all. Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun with it!

I thought the whole point of a TS was that they are not straight forward ;)!

I have no idea how much to charge (I presume that is what you were asking) but I would contact a few photographers that do it professionally as a potential client and enquire about an image.
