Question for Canon EOS Users

I have a Canon 7d for which I bought a Tamron 18-270 VC PZD Lens.

As I understand it that Tamron lens was specifically designed for use on cropped sensor cameras. (Such as the 7d.) I haven't used the lens much--or the camera for that matter--but I'm quite happy with it.

I am wondering what would happen if I mounted the Tamron on one of my EF-mount film cameras?

Well,...I guess I first need to know if the Tamron CAN be mounted on an EF film camera. (Even assuming it would physically fit--which I believe it should since it's EF--I am still reluctant to try it lest I cause some form of subtle damage to the lensmount or electronic contacts on either the camera or the lens.)

By the way, I have an EF 50mm that works fine on both the 7d and my EOS film cameras. I just don't want to risk the Tamron or the 7d without first getting some feedback.

Thank you.

Here's what I think you're looking for: "The "DiII" in the Tamron 18-270/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD name indicates that this lens is designed only for use on APS-C crop sensor DSLRs. It does not have full frame coverage, though it can physically be mounted on a full frame DSLR."

So yes to EF mount, no you won't get a full frame image on a full frame body.

Now Canon's own EFS lenses are a different matter entirely.

They can ONLY be used crop bodies - as their rear elements would damage the mirrors on a full frame body.

Thanks for the response, Chris. I fully expected that if the lens WOULD mount to a 35mm EF then I would not get a full-frame image. I just want to see what it produces (but didn't want to damage anything).

Thanks again.

If it is a "EF" mount then the lens will mount happily on the EOS film/full frame digi no problem, with no ill effects. What you will see is a lot of Vignetting (sp?) basically it will be like looking down a black tunnel with the image in the centre, until you zoom past 75/80ish mm at which point the image should fill the frame.

it should meter/focus etc... with no problem

the image would look a little like your profile pic/avatar but with the central image not as distorted

Thank you for that information, Oliver. With the responses from yourself and Chris I am encouraged to try some shots using the Tamron on my old Canon EOS 750.

Thanks again.
