Question Re. Beroflex Zoom Lens Please.

Hi
I recently picked this old Beroflex M42 lens up in a junk shop for crazy money. I thought it would keep the dust out of one of my old camera bodies, but on giving it a good clean, it is in excellent condition.
Question is, what is the purpose of the ring with 1.6, 1.4, 1.3, macro etc? It has the usual focus/zoom/aperture rings, but then this extra ring? Never seen this before (sorry about poor photo.)
Many thanks :)

Macro ratios
1:1 means the image captured on the negative is the same size as the object in real life ... That's quite a bad description isn't it ...?

1:2 means the object is half the size of real life ... And on from there ...

Someone else will do a better job I'm sure!
