Well, I couldn't resist, so I went back today with the Canonet and the 5D2.

Holy Sh!t, that was an effort carry all my clobber and heavy tripod up the trail! :o

Canonet shots are TBD (To be developed).

Here are three shots from the 5D2 - with the 24mm f1.4 L prime lens.

Chris,
I really like the framing on that second shot. Looks like a place I'd like to visit. How big is the area and how far did you have to hike to reach this nice spot?

Thanks Ralph.

Soldier Pass / Brin's Mesa

This loop trail through the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness offers moderate elevation changes and lots of variety: the Devil's Sinkhole and Seven Sacred Pools near the beginning, massive arches along the canyon wall during the climb up Soldier Pass, and long views from the top of Brin's Mesa. You even get to see Steamboat Rock from an angle that makes it really look like a boat.

Trailhead: From the 89A / 179 "Y" ... take 89A west 1.3 miles;
turn right on Soldiers Pass Road for 1.5 miles;
turn right on Rim Shadows for 0.2 miles;
parking lot is on your left.

Length: 5 miles (loop) Elevation change: 800 ft

The Devil's Kitchen Sink Hole is about a mile into the trail, about 120 feet elevation from the trail-head.

Sedona itself is a huge area - with dozens of trails, and a very photogenic set of rock, canyons and mesas.

Brilliant !! I'm so jealous of what you have there Chris

Thanks Davie - I'm jealous of what you have in Scotland - I think we just gravitate towards images of unusual or new landscapes - something different to what we experience locally.

i'm a big fan of american culture Chris and I'd love a shot at a month in the states doing nothing but taking shots

I would love another month in the States as well just travelling around on Amtrack so I could get everywhere. I think one of the big problems with going out to the States is fitting it all in When I win the lottery lol

Dave, you're right on the mark here. The US is so big and has so much variety that it is indeed missile to take it all in during one visit. I have friends and relatives from the Midwest that call me up and say they are planning on visiting me in Montana. grt I say and then ask them how long they will be visiting. A common answers something like a week. But then they tell me how they plan on visiting the Black Hills, Custer Batterfield and Yellowstone National Park. Hmm, I tell them that they now have a one month trip planned. They often have no idea how far apart things are just in Montana let alone all across the US.

I ride Amtrak frequently. It's not up to the higher level of service one sees in Europe but if time is not an issue Amtrak is a great way to travel. I definitely suggest sleeping car accommodations for any trip that entails an overnight stay. Remember sleeping accommodations include all meals in the dinning car and that's a big plus.

Fly in to a major Amtrak hub like Chicago or Washington DC. Then take the train to various destinations. Stop and rent a car in those places you are intested in and spend a few days shooting. Then get back on the train to go to your next destination. I'd guess a month long I could provide plenty of variety if it w planned out well.
