In preparation for an upcoming road-trip on Route 66, I have been reading a great book called 'Route 66 Lost & Found'.
The author, Russell A. Olsen, has developed the idea of collecting vintage postcards which depict old Route 66, and then revisiting the sites today to replicate the postcard shot with a modern day equivalent.
The resulting image pairs are fascinating, providing a record of how quickly things can change, and even how quickly the natural environment can reclaim man-made structures.
The author also has a website, featuring additional photographs from Route 66

A great read, and inspiring stuff
