Critique Welcomed Rockin' G Ranch - Photoshoot

Chris Dodkin

West Coast Correspondent
Sunday afternoon, I hit the trail with a selection of models to the Rockin' G Ranch, to see what the Fuji X-T1 and 56mm Lens could do, using the new (to me) Face Detection AF...

Sarah - Test shot at f/2 with EF -42 Fill-Flash - just in case Face Detection AF couldn't manage f/1.2!

Sarah @ f/1.2 - FD AF - 'Lastolite' style reflector for bounce fill

Sarah - 3/4 length @ f/1.2 - Reflector Fill - No issues with FD AF

Daniela - f/1.2 - FD AF picks the model and not the horse as the point of focus

Daniela - F/1.2 with heavy backlight and reflector fill - FD AF

Daniela - F/1.2 - closer-in with shallower DOF - FD AF

Daniela - f/1.2 - super close with very shallow DOF and face more than filling frame - FD AF still tracking eye focus

Teara - f/1.2 - Eyes partially obscured by hair - still good FD AF lock

Teara - f/1.2 - closer-in with shallow DOF - FD AF

Teara - f/1.2 - Shallow DOF with FD AF

Kat - f/1.2 - Fading light just post-sunset - FD AF still tracking at close range and shallow DOF

Wow. A new career beckons, Chris. These all look totally pro to my eyes, though I've never done anything remotely similar. Did SWMBO come along to keep everything professional? ;)

Thanks Rob - no swmbo - I had to behave without her! :D

The last one is beautiful. By far my favourite. So natural in pose and in light.
Thanks Tom

Woww, really good shots Chris. Daniela looks so sexy and Kat looks so pure, i like them both
Thanks Aldous - Kat came along with her mum, and really enjoyed having her picture taken.

As both Tom and yourself observed, she had a very refreshing natural look.

I worked-up another shot from that last set in B&W - lovely light, just after sunset.

I like the last the most. So natural, despite being posed. Beautiful.
Thanks Rob - that last one wasn't posed, you're bang on the money
Everyone was done for the day - the models were taking it in turns to ride some of the ranch's horses

I spotted Kat looking into the twilight awaiting her go on the horse, stepped to one side and asked her to look my way for a few shots

And that's what you get for asking :)

Love the light on the first shot!

Face detect AF is something I've never even though of using - I think the D800 has it somewhere

Thanks Dave - fill lighting was a lastolite and some fill flash backed off 1 stop - I added a skylight to really warm up the light through the hair to give everything that golden tone

The face detection thing is amazing - never thought it would work, but I have to say I'm impressed - I'll be using it next time

Lovely set Chris and the lighting works very well. Love the last of the colours shots but the B&W one is the winner for me. Relaxed and natural and with beautiful tones. Nice. :)
Thanks Pete :)
