San Diego during the big blackout

Canon 5D3 - 8-1200mm f1 lens @ 1/10000 - 16:9 panoramic crop

Power was off for 7 hrs!

No power anywhere in San Diego as the whole grid tripped, and the power stations went offline to avoid damage

No stores open, the few food places only taking cash, no gas stations as they couldn't pump petrol

Couldn't open the garage door etc etc

There were a lot of people out BBQing last night!

Power back on at 10:30pm for us - everything came up ok

Looks like someone at the power company f'd-up working on a substation near Yuma - and that tripped a cascade effect that took all power stations offline up to Orange county, down into Mexico, and across to Arizona.

See, that's the problem with Canon cameras they just aren't as good as Nikon in low light!! And I must say I think your composition really needs a bit more thought. You've clearly heard about the rule of thirds but sticking to it like a religion for every shot suggests a lack of creativity to me!! And I think the black border doesn't really suit the subject at all!!! Maybe a square crop could rescue it though.

He, he. Just testing the boundaries! ;)

I always find it quite nice when this happens despite the inconvenience. I recall one winter in the snow have the power go out and deciding to see if the pub was open. It was and they had hand pumps and lots of candles. It was wonderful.

I had a shot like that... It turns out I forgot to remove the lens cap :o :D
