Shooting kids

Not much of a portrait shooter, as you all know (I prefer subjects that don't move or complain). But I do occasionally bring my camera along to my daughter's birthday parties and events and practice on her and her friends. Here are a few of my latest attempts. I welcome feedback and criticism.

I dunno Darren, shouldn't doubt yourself, you've done a pretty good job of those, in fact, no# 3 & 4 are amazing!! What a great angle and capture! I would say to crop/mask the tree off from the right on number 4, but other than that it's perfect, I bet it'd be a right challenge to do that shot again!! Lol

I think that would make a good thread!

Back to Darren's pictures. I think they're great. My fave is the little girl with the kite. As to the tree that was mentioned, doh,...I didn't see that! My eyes were to busy following the kite into the sky. But when I did see it after Dan mentioned it,...it didn;t bother me in the least. In fact I think I like it in the composition. Mind you, I'd like to see the cropped version for comparison purposes. The first image is a stunner too, as is the last one.

Hey Darren, very nice work. Each photo is a gem in its own way. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Yeah, great set imo...
Im not sure i follow the tree comment? the little one in the corner?
or have you removed a tree and reposted?

The line up to the kite is brilliant, my comment on that shot would simply be that i would have shot it at more of an angle so as to get the kite into the corner ...
It actually works quite well cropped like that , but does take on a very "stock" image feel to it somehow..

hope you don't mind my tinkering...

Thanks, guys. The little girl with the kite is my own. The others are friends. I already cloned out the offending tree, Hamish. I agree it's a bit "stock"- will play with angle and lighting next time we fly her kite.

Superb set - getting down to the kids level is I think, the key component to engaging kid photos.

I love #1 - great expression and DOF, and #3 great expression and comp/backdrop/DOF
