Shun me? ...

Shun me for saying this, but I've been skulking around eBay looking for some cameras to be used as decorations lol. My chest of drawers looks bare, and seeing as film cameras are pretty cheap and look way nicer than a modern day equivalent.. Seems like the perfect idea.

In my defence however I have actually looked into getting a film camera since you lot do inspire me. However it's the parts after taking the photo that I don't understand. Modern kid me. Lol

Get a cheap film camera and give it a go, there are loads of cheap SLRs out there and even the pro/semi pro level film cameras aren't actually that expensive. Eg, my Nikon 3100 entry level DSLR = £320ish, Nikon FM2n semi pro camera = £110ish, the FM2n will easily outlast the DSLR and won't ever go out of date.

... The fm2n is sorta out of date ;)

Adam, I'm going to make this into a new thread as I fell you should be encouraged further! ;)

... Right, that's better!

my advice, but your self a compact film camera from the 90's ... Somthing point and shoot that will definitely work! If you need help finding one, let me know and ill give you some pointers.

next step is to load a roll of a film call 'ilford xp2' ... I won't go into huge detail for now as you don't need to know yet, but basically it's a type of black and white film that can be developed on the high street.

take your photos

take it to max speilman and ask for this:
cd only
scaned to 'pro' files
saved in 'mono'

that will give you as good a quality as you will need and should only cost £5 or less
prints are nice, but expect to then pay more money.

The experience of getting those images back, and discovering the joy of and anticipation of having to wait to see if they came out well is where it is most fun. If you enjoy that you will be hooked!
Once you are hooked, then we can look at getting you set up with a nice 1950's compact camera that will challenge you more... But is also more likely to let you down ... Starting with something that isn't going to fail you (1990's compact) is a safer bet, and you should be able to get one, a film and have it processed for £15ish :)

I'll tell you what decorations I've bid on; an ilford sportsman, cosina 35mm slr, an Agfa silette 45mm, franka NX 49 & a Ricoh 500 GX.
The only 1 not in working order is the Ricoh . And the desc of the cosina is limited, so prob doesn't work.

How many shots can you take with that film you said Hamish? And are any of the above appropriate?
:)

It's 36 shot 35mm format film
all of those are 35mm format

That franka is an aweful pile of shite! (Fun photos though)

let us know if you win one of them and we can help you get on with it!

Cosina is a nice little camera had one Pentax bayonet mount basic if it doesnt work check the button battery in the bottom as these are dreadful for stopping the camera the on off switch is very easily knocked

I suppose 36 isn't bad for a fiver really is it. I pop into manchester twice a week as it is, so may have a go at this.
I'm not bothered about if being ****, I only bid on these cameras because they looked the nicest (how vain) but they are decorations ;)
Are any of them any good or decent enough for using?
I should hopefully win them all ;)

Do you mean franka nx 49? Or 40? I have a different branded version of the 40 ... It's not pretty! It's made ofthe cheapest plastic! Very very crappy toy camera! Link me!

Which version of the silette? Which version of the sportsman?

in fact, give us links to all of them ... Ill take a look!

have you thought about having a look in charity shops ... You don't have to pay postage that way! :)

There is some pretty shity cameras there ;)

That franka... For £0.99 it's a bit of fun, but it's not worth more than that! You will go up against a lomo fanboy if you are unlucky too ...
The halina is a pretty crappy camera, they do have a certain charm to thier appearance though, and very easy to use!
The cosina... Well, it's probably a nice camera, I expect you would get decent enough photos out of it. There are much nicer SLR's out there.
i don't know anything about the finetta, looks pretty enough for display if nothing elsewhere
the ricoh is nice enough if it works ... I suspect it doesn't

the agfa is the nicest for me ... Mainly as it comes with an accessory rangefinder... Get your self a little old light meter to go with it, and you have everything you need! ... Probably the nicest looking of the bunch too is say!

I have a 1960 Ilford sportsman, you are quite welcome to borrow it if you wish I would lend you my Nikon EM but I don't have a spare lens lol

Also check out the Fujica ST605n, its a 35mm SLR, you can usually get them for about £20 with a lens, my mate borrow mine....he still has it lol really easy to use and a great starter film SLR.

David - very kind of you, however I'm only bidding on these for decorations lol.
Hamish - you make me ****, knowledgeable and tells you how it is.
I'm not looking to pay a great deal for any of these, they will simply be decorations, however if one works I may stick a roll through them if and when I'm bored. I don't really care for how bad/good they are, it'll just be a bit of fun really :)

If you are looking for decorations check out some of the older Kodak folders like a 1a folding brownie, some shoot a 116 film which you can't get anymore, they look awesome and are very very old lol or look at getting any folder like a Bessa that shoots 120 film, you can still easily get that for when you want to shoot and it looks amazing sitting on a desk lol
