I use the heavier kit most of the time but revert to the XTi when weight is critical like on mountaineering trips.

Nice setup!

I have been considering getting a smaller body/lens to carry with me (at least always in the car), will do some research but Something like a 600D and a 17-85 IS would work well I think.

I use my a Nikon d50 with 35mm f2.0 as my carry around Nikon
id like a d3100 with the 35 f1.8 dx to replace it but cant justify it at the mo ... especially as the only justification is size

I just suck it up and always carry around my large, full-frame body (5D2), because I was always regretting when I didn't have it with me. But for carry-around purposes, I usually just keep a 50mm prime on there. It makes it relatively light and compact.
