My Nikon D850 / Z8 does the stacking internally. I examine the JPG files to find a start point ( I front focus slightly) and then use Helicon Focus 8 for the stacking. They then go through my normal process of Lightroom to Photoshop.
I like that they will handle the NEF files Nikon provides. One caveat: if you have any cloud backup services working, suspend them while working with Helicon. The inability to lock the file handle will crash Helicon.
That happens with darktable, my favorite Raw editor, too. I don't use any cloud backup myself, but it turned out that Windows Defender/antivirus did the same thing. It only became an issue when exporting very large TIFF files, as they take so long to export.
