Storage...

An old chestnut possibly, but just wondered what you guys are doing regarding the retention of image files...particularly RAW images.

I'm looking at another external drive, but wondered if anyone had experience of "The Cloud", which I find quite scary really...

Cloud storage is really quite straight forward and I imagine most suppliers will issue software that makes using the cloud drive almost the same as using an external hard drive. The only issue is that you need decent internet connection, which doesn't tend to be too much of a problem these days, and that as image files tend to be quite large you will need quite a bit of capacity, maybe around 500GB - 1TB or more depending on how much you need. Cloud storage will also be far safer than an external harddrive as the servers have huge amounts of redundancy.

I do have cloud storage but only 1 GB so I back up to external drives. Having a Mac I use Time Machine and have another drive that has a backup of all my files that are on the computers harddrive. This second back up is controlled by Carbon Copy Cloner software.

Cheers Paul...at present I'm looking at about 90 GB of Raw files on my current drives.

BT Cloud allow me 50 GB of free space, but I can't see an option to purchase more...will have to investigate further.

I guess it's just the issue of trusting your files to another person that gives me the willies....!;)

I use network attached RAID devices (7 TB: Synology in Germany and Buffalo in the UK) in both the UK and Germany. One is the main filestore using RAID 6 and this is backed up to a second one (also RAID 6) in a different building. My only problem is synchronising LR catalogues between Germany and the UK. The internet connection in Germany is fast but, being based in rural locations, in the UK it is just too slow to contemplate either a cloud-based option or a VPN transfer option. I have a portable RAID I use and a large external portable drive and I need to set up a mechanism using these. I have another RAID at home which I try to keep as a backup for the main LR catalogue.

The RAID copies are done automatically but the home one relies on manual intervention and is not really quite right yet.
