Cheers Pete! This one is making my eyes funny now. Either I'm getting tired, or this isn't as sharp as the other person on the stairs which I have printed on the wall next to me. Out of interest - I got a few fibre based digital prints done a few years ago. Or rather... it started as a negative, which was then scanned and the digital image went off to Germany to a wonderful man called Kai. Has anyone heard of him and is he still doing the prints? My contact over here has disappeared.

Joan is good for printing... Nice lady too!

If this chap was wearing anything other that a suit it wouldn't be quite as good ...
I think you have a nack for being in the right place Lesley
(btw, did you notice the bit of text under your name?)

Timing and observation - lovely composition and the figure finishes it perfectly

So - do you remember if you hung around waiting for someone to come down the stairs?

To answer Hamish first - yes... I spotted that yesterday. It's taken you less than a week to find my nickname. That's pretty good going! :)

Chris - normally I only hang around for a couple of minutes on a street. I think I waited at the bottom of these stairs for about twenty. They simply cried out for some human form, but there was nobody around...

I don't need any more prints, but I was kind of hoping the digital fibre based were still going. Kai Sandner designed and built the enlarger himself and I'm afraid that's about all I know. I gave away my last Cibachrome to a good friend when she moved. We seem to be losing some of the finest technology :(

I wish I could dabble in the darkroom, but I know nothing about enlargers. This one Variochromat Homepage appears to be what Kai invented/used. Ooooh! Using the English version I can now see he is still doing the prints and I don't have to go through my local contact. Am I allowed to praise the quality of his work? He did some prints for an exhibition and the quality is absolutely stunning. I am a huge fan of fibre based prints, but the perfectionist in me likes control of the digital image.

Oh... that's just incredible! I was let loose in a darkroom a couple of times when I did A level Art, but it never got any further than that. I know Kai personally tweaked my digital files to get the very best out of them and I believe he sharpened them for me too. As he was visiting someone in the UK, he hand delivered the prints as well. The framed prints (or what was left over) finally got put up in our study over Easter after sitting in a very big box for nearly four years. I don't know enough to figure out if anyone else is doing this - there seem to be claims of a fibre based type of paper for a printer and possibly genuine digital FB prints in the US.

I can definitely vouch for the quality and service :)

There are certainly many fibre-based inkjet media around these days but there are certainly not many companies or individuals doing this type of printing. I think virtually all of the commercial machines print onto RC paper - maybe Joan can comment.
