Critique Welcomed Studio Diner

On my way to a meeting this morning, popped by the Studio Diner in Kearny Mesa to take some shots.

The diner is a 40s style diner, built on the side of a working movie studio lot, so is suitably movie themed throughout.

Lovely reflective chrome exterior, and big neon signs.

Even the exterior lighting is made up of movie style lights with barn doors.

Did not have time to get breakfast - but I have eaten there, and the food matches the look and theme - and has featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

X-Pro1 and 18mm Lens

The Velvia one is very nice but the BW works very nicely indeed with the chrome and glass. Very nice, Chris. (Stock up on Velvia Chris,...Fuji is rumored to be cutting back their offerings, although I think 35mm is safe for the moment.;))

Thanks Brian - I think I've got enough Velvia to last me a while ;)

Hi Chris

Wow! quite impressive, I do like in particular the monochrome as the metallic element of the diner really adds to the tones of the image. The colour image is very powerful and pleasing hence the Wow at the beginning of my post.

Only my 4th post and what great images on the forum. Thanks for sharing.

What's you thoughts on the 18mm lens, I am tempted to buy one.

Thanks Steve :)

I like the 18mm Lens a lot - it get's some bad press online, but I've yet to have any issue with it.

Image quality is excellent, and sharpness etc are very good indeed.

I do correct for CA in Adobe RAW converter, but this is a single click to get any CA removed, so no issue at all.

Gear-heads! Someone said it was the weakest of the three—not that it was a poor lens. The FUDmeisters picked up on it, and without ever shooting with it claimed it was a dud.

It may be the weakest of the three, but there are very few f/2.0 18mm lenses that can match it—on any platform. It is sort of like saying Manchester United is a crap team, because they lost the championship by one point; or that Sebastian Vettel is a poor driver since Mark Webber—on the same team—is leading him by 16 points, even though their team is clearly ahead in F1. It is all relative, and few lenses from any maker could stand up to the standard set by the 35mm f/1.4. Against it, being number two or three, still means it is an extraordinarily good lens.
